“Dongguan Manufacturing” Explores Overseas Market via Canton Fair

    The 123rd Canton Fair was opened on April 15 and it has now entered phase 3. The Foreign Investment Promotion Center of Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City has organized 176 enterprises to attend the fair, taking up 538 booths. The enterprises from Dongguan all brought their strengths into full play with some displaying new products and some demonstrating on the spot. According to statistics, the attending enterprises from Dongguan have reached intended transaction worth of USD 431 million in the first two phases of the fair, which is a year-on-year growth of 7.6%.

   On May 2, the journalist learned from the spot of Canton Fair that attending Canton Fair has become an important way for enterprises from Dongguan to explore foreign trade market and that many enterprises introduce their products to the world through the platform of Canton Fair.

Dongguan enterprises vie for orders by bringing their strengths into full play

   The booths of Dong Guan Yin Guan Travel Ware Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as Yin Guan) are frequently visited by buyers who came to visit and talk about cooperation.

   “The customers came to consult us have increased by one third and many of them are new customers introduced by our regular customers.” Lin Lizhen with Yin Guan told the journalist.

    Yin Guan is a company in Chashan Town, Dongguan, specializing in making suitcase. The company sold more than 780,000 suitcases last year with half of them being sold in domestic market and half in overseas market. Its sales volume this year is expected to grow by 30%, reaching 1 million. Currently, the company owns six production lines with one just being put into use on May 2. Lin Lizhen said, “the orders received in April alone include more than 100,000 suitcases and all the production lines are now working at their full capacity.”

    Through attending Canton Fair, the products of the company quickly found its way to Japanese market. It is expected to export about 100,000 suitcases to Japan this year, representing 10% of the company’s annual output. Lin Lizhen told the journalist that many existing customers also introduce new customers to the company and that many customers are satisfied with the company’s products and asked to pay a visit to the factory.

   In front of the booths of Dongguan City Shaerge Food Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Shaerge Food), many customers were tasting the company’s peanut bars. Wang Qiucheng, Marketing Director of the company told the journalist that it was the third time that Shaerge Food attended Canton Fair. The company has reached cooperation agreement with countries and regions such as Canada, South Korea, and the United States through Canton Fair. At the 122nd Canton Fair, a Canadian buyer even placed an order and transferred payment on the spot.

   “There aren’t on-the-spot orders during this Canton Fair, but there were dozens of buyers coming to consult every day and half of them show willingness for cooperation.” Wang Qiucheng told the journalist.

   It is learned that Shaerge Food brought many new products to the Canton Fair this time. For example, the packages of the peanut bars include elements like some folk traditions and customs representative of Dongguan have drawn the attention of many buyers.

   Different from Yin Guan and Shaerge Food, Souyute Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Souyute) attended Canton Fair for the first time. With not so prominent location, its booths did not see many visits from the buyers. Xiao Qiwang, Manager of the company’s Overseas Department, didn’t care much about that and he told the journalist, “as this is our first attendance, we mainly come to learn from the exhibition experience of the enterprises in the same industry and seek some customers in the process.”

Notable results have been achieved in expanding overseas market

   The journalist learned that Canton Fair has been playing a positive role in helping enterprises in Dongguan to expand overseas market. 

   Dongguan Rushifeng Knitting Co., Ltd., (hereinafter referred to as Rushifeng) is a regular exhibitor of Canton Fair. Li Ziqiang, Chairman of the company, told the journalist that last year the company’s export volume reached over USD 30 million, and 80% of the sales were contributed by the customers whom they made acquaintance with during Canton Fair. Their cooperation with ZARA, a Spanish garment retailer, was a result of Canton Fair. Currently, Rushifeng supplies ZARA with garments worth of millions of dollars every year.

   Li Ziqiang noted that Rushifeng is now accelerating transformation with the styles of its clothes shifting to “fast fashion” to cater to the overseas market.

On the morning of May 3, the staff of Guangdong Zhigao Cultural & Creative Inc. (hereinafter referred to as Zhigao) was performing various pen spinning tricks in front of the booths, earning rounds of applause and cheering among the buyers. Some even asked to be the students and learn from the “expert”.

Zhigao is a company that engages in the R&D and manufacturing of spinning pens. The company sells about 10 million spinning pens with the prices varying from several to dozens of yuan. At present, 5% of the annual sales volume is contributed by overseas market, while 60% of the overseas orders are from the buyers of the Canton Fair. Yang Zhaoxia, Manager of the Foreign Trade Department of the company, told the journalist that in order to attract more overseas customers, Zhigao brought the newly developed spinning pens to this Canton Fair and even recruited pen spinning experts to give a show on the spot.

  Though transforming toward supply chain service provider, Souyute does not slow down its pace to expand overseas market. Xiao Qiwang noted that Souyute now opens its brand-name stores overseas through its partners. It has now opened about 30 specialty stores in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, generating annual sales volume of over RMB 40 million. It has set more than 40 specialty counters in the shopping malls in Saudi Arabia, generating annual sales volume of over RMB 30 million. Souyute also hopes to know more overseas partners through Canton Fair. In terms of online business, Souyute is poised to touch cross-border e-commerce.

  The trump card for Yin Guan to explore overseas market lies in accelerating products upgrading. Lin Lizhen told the journalist that generally, enterprises dealing with suitcases and bags convene an order meeting every two months, but Yin Gua offers new designs to the customers every day. As soon as a product is designed, it will be sent to the customers for choice right away, so the company is in fact hosting order meeting every day.

  It is known that among the workforce of nearly 300 employees in Yin Guan, more than 10 of them engage in product design and development. The company can launch at least 20 new designs every month. 

  Wang Qiucheng told the journalist that during Canton Fair, some overseas buyers made some request concerning the size and flavor of its products. To explore overseas market, Shaerge Food plans to provide these overseas buyers with customized services and produce products that meet their requirements. (Dai Shuangcheng)
