Which city in China stands out in terms of competitiveness in convention and exhibition? On November 10, China Convention/Exhibition/Event Society of the Ministry of Commerce hosted the launch event of the “2017 China City Conference and Exhibition Industry Competitiveness Index”, releasing information about competitiveness of 2016 China city convention and exhibition industry. Dongguan was awarded“2017 China's Most Competitive Convention and Exhibition Cities”.
In October this year, Dongguan was just awarded “2017 China’s Top Ten Convention and Exhibition Cities” by China Convention/Exhibition/Event Society. China Processing Trade Products Fair (CPTPF), Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo (short for Maritime Silk Road Expo) and other exhibitions achieved the “2017 China’s Famous Exhibition Gold Award”.

The current most authoritative and scientific evaluation index in China’s convention and exhibition industry

At the launch event of the“2017 China City Conference and Exhibition Industry Competitiveness Index”, ten direct-controlled municipalities or sub-provincial cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Xiamen, Chongqing and Qingdao, and ten provincial capitals or prefectures including Changsha, Zhengzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Kunming, Foshan, Dongguan, Fuzhou, Zhongshan and Hefei were awarded 2017 China's Most Competitive Convention and Exhibition Cities.
It would be difficult to objectively reflect the development status quo and potential of a city’s convention and exhibition industry if there is a shortage of unified index of the development level of the exhibition industry and a complete index system measuring the competitiveness of a city’s convention and exhibition industry. Against this backdrop, China Convention/Exhibition/Event Society has compiled the Annual Report of China City Conference and Exhibition Industry Competitiveness Index (CCCECI) for two consecutive years. The index is the most authoritative and scientific evaluation index in China’s convention and exhibition industry and plays a relatively strong guiding role in strengthening the competitiveness of city convention and exhibition industry.
Yuan Zaiqing, President of China Convention/Exhibition/Event Society, expressed at the event that China city conference and exhibition industry competitiveness index compares and analyzes from four aspects including the exhibition citys overall environmental competitiveness, exhibition professional competitiveness, exhibition educational competitiveness and government competitiveness. Building on the research outcomes of the launch event of 2016 China City Conference and Exhibition Industry Competitiveness Index”, data related to convention and exhibition industry of nearly one hundred cities of the country were analyzed this year. The data were optimized and extracted to form an evaluation system with 10 highlight indexes such as the exhibition city’s business-friendliness competitiveness, international exhibition industry cooperative index, convention and exhibition educational index and service index of the department in charge of convention and exhibition.
Dongguan hosts a sizeable exhibition every 6 days on average
In recent years, a series of high-level and large exhibitions featuring China International Animation Copyright Fair, China Processing Trade Products Fair, Dongguan Taiwan Trade Fair, Maritime Silk Road Expo and International Famous Furniture Fair have been making presence in Dongguan successively, injecting fresh impetus among numerous industries in Dongguan. According to the statistics of the Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City, Dongguan hosts around 60 sizeable exhibitions every year, which amounts to a sizeable exhibition every 6 days.
According to the incomplete statistics of the Department of the Promotion of International Trade of the Bureau of Commerce, Dongguan has hosted 65 exhibitions with an area of over 3,000 square meters, which is a year-on-year growth of 8%. The total exhibition areas exceed 3.4 million square meters (including special sales and special markets), which is basically the same as that of last year. The total number of exhibitors is over 13,000, a decline of 23.5% over the previous year. The exhibitions have attracted more than 2.7 million buyers and visitors, a 3.8% year-on-year increase. Dongguan has hosted 380 conferences at hotels and exhibition halls with each conference having 100 or more participants and the total number of the participants exceeded 130,000.
The exhibition halls are constantly expanding. Currently, Dongguan boasts 4 professional exhibition halls including Guangdong Modern International Exhibition Center, Dongguan International Conference & Exhibition Center, Changping Exhibition Center and Humen International Exhibition Center (newly built in 2016). They occupy an area of about 600,000 square meters, of which indoor exhibition area covers around 200,00 square meters and outdoor exhibition area 140,000 square meters (with parking space included). In 2016, the exhibition halls of Dongguan had expanded another 17,000 square meters of exhibition area.

According to incomplete statistics, the total exhibition area of 6 key exhibitions hosted or co-hosted by the People’s Government of Dongguan reached 548,000 square meters in 2016, which is a 15.8% increase over the previous year, showing a sound development momentum. The 6 key exhibitions include 3 national exhibitions of China Processing Trade Products Fair national exhibitions, China International Animation Copyright Fair and Chinese (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week, 2 provincial exhibitions of Maritime Silk Road Expo and Guangdong International Robot & Intelligent Equipment Expo as well as Taiwan Trade Fair.

Convention and exhibition industry shows great diversity

Industrial exhibitions make up most of all these exhibitions. In 2016, Dongguan hosted 26 industrial exhibitions with average exhibition area of over 3,000 square meters, accounting for 40% of all the exhibitions and representing a year-on-year growth of 47%. At the same time, consumption-oriented exhibitions have decreased in number but improved in quality. Dongguan hosted 33 consumption-oriented exhibitions with average exhibition area of 3,000 square meters in 2016, accounting for 50.8% of all the exhibitions and representing a 5.7% decline over the previous year. Viewed from the data collected, however, the majority of the consumption-oriented exhibitions in 2016 occupied an average exhibition area of over 10,000 square meters.

What merits attention is that the statistics indicate that there is prominent growth of Dongguan’s new exhibitions. In 2016, Dongguan hosted 14 new exhibitions, making up a total exhibition area of about 150,000 square meters. Dongguan has successfully attracted the convening of the 93th China International Occupational Safety & Health Goods Expo, 2016 International (GD) Energy Conservation Exhibition and 2016 South China (Dongguan) International Furniture Machinery & Material Fair in Dongguan, making up a total exhibition area of more than 70,000 square meters.

Meanwhile, Dongguan’s convention and exhibition industry also demonstrates diversified development. According to incomplete statistics, Dongguan has hosted 380 conferences at hotels and exhibition halls with each conference having 100 or more participants and the total number of participants of over 130,000. There were 2 national conferences, namely, Songshan Lake Chinese IC Innovation Forum and Chinese Engineering Science and Technology Forum—Molecular Diagnosis Technology and China Molecular Diagnosis Technology Conference.
